Building and rehabilitation program
Rehabilitation of the health units
New Facilities
Rehabilitation of the health units
The main objective of the rehabilitation program was to improve the hospitals infrastructure as a whole and to
provide the units with modern medical equipment so that no major investments would have to be effected in the near future.
Special attention was drawn to the security of the physical structure and to meeting hygienic and environmental standards.
This approach has successfully resulted in a unique operative system including solutions for energy and water supply
as well as sewage disposal.
The Ngorongoro District has no central electricity supply system. In order to minimise the considerable fuel consumption
of the generators a well functioning solar energy supply system was installed in both hospitals and in the affiliated
DigoDigo Dispensary in Sonjo. It supplies electricity for the light network of the compounds and staff houses, the water
heating and for the operation of all the equipment - medical, laboratory, office, and hospital kitchen.
A new water supply system was installed in both hospitals including the construction of water tanks.
The main hospital blocks, comprising wards, operation theatres, guest rooms, laundry and kitchen, and all staff houses
are provided with a conventional sewer system and a 100% biological sewage treatment plant.
